After two weeks of putting Whisper on stall rest for his cuts (which he probably didn’t need, but… it made me feel better) we took the horses out for a trail ride at Wunderlich Park in Woodside. It’s up in the redwoods, hilly and shady. It’s also the historic site of the Folger’s family ranch, which features a beautiful old stable that is still in use. A nice ride for a warm day and very close to the barn, though we do trailer out for it.
We met at 9:30 to get started with grooming and loading the horses. I was late (had to have coffee). It took us an hour and a half to get ourselves together. Whisper got a bath, Raleigh got vacuumed, Bonnie cleaned her stall. At the park, we rode 9 or 10 miles, which took 3 or 4 hours (I wasn’t wearing a watch). We got off and walked a bit (to get circulation to our behinds), and I gave myself shin splints. I guess it was hiking in boots that caused the shin splints. Luckily you don’t feel those until the next day.
Whisper didn’t seem to have any problems, and Raleigh didn’t break a sweat. Bonnie is going to help me get Whisper in shape so that we can go horse camping at Point Reyes in about a month. There are some beautiful trails out to the beach there.
I haven’t been very good at taking pictures lately, and even less good at making posts, so here’s an iPhone picture taken August 9th of Whisper’s cut pastern and his fancy wrap using duct tape.
Bonnie tells me Whisper escaped his stall while on “stall rest” and had a wild time running around the barn, evading capture. So much for “rest”.
