pattern picking

For my Intermediate Sewing class, I have to make a jacket. I suppose our instructor will go over her definition of “jacket” when she officially assigns the project in a few weeks, but I’ve been thinking about this ever since I saw it in the syllabus, because I LOVE coats. I collect coats, and I own about 15. What’s the difference? A jacket is generally shorter and lighter in weight. Here’s an article I found on the difference. I’m not sure that clears it up for me, so I’ll ultimately have to decide when the instructor clarifies the assignment in a few weeks.

In the meantime, my brain is spinning with possibilities, so I’m going to ask my readers for input:

Summary of answers is here

The options:

The Collette Lady Gray, which happens to have an awesome sew-along going on right now.

The Decades of Style #3101 1931 Parisienne Coat

The Decades of Style #4009 1940s Claremont Coat (which is way cuter in real life than the drawing makes it out to be)

Simplicity 4951 (out of print) I don’t know why I love this coat so much, but I do.

Vogue 8679 (check out the tail)
